The Saf-T-Liner® HDX bus features a rear-engine design that is the mainstay of transit-style bus fleets. It has a capacity of 66-90 passengers. The engine is located in the back for ideal weight distribution whether empty and loaded. This also creates a quiet and comfortable ride, with an over sized windshield giving the driver great visibility. Able to tackle mountain roads and city streets in style, this bus features a thermostatically controlled hydraulic cooling system, larger brakes, a steel drop frame, optional air suspension and optional transmission retarders for improved braking. There's even generous optional under body storage for student activities and trips.

Standard Features

The Saf-T-Liner® HDX comes with the following standard features:

  • Available with the MBE900 series Mercedes-Benz diesel engine in a wide range of horsepower and torque ratings.
  • Also available with CAT, Cummins or John Deere engines
  • Heavy-duty steel drop frame for easy engine access and an improved center of gravity.
  • Thermostatically controlled hydraulic engine cooling system.
  • Ergonomically designed driver's command center with logically placed, easy-to-read gauges.
  • Fully adjustable driver's seat, tilt/telescoping steering column, and optional pedal cluster.
  • A 45-degree wheel cut offers outstanding maneuverability and a tight turning radius.
  • For the environmentally conscience, the HDX can also be powered by natural gas.

Safety Features

Decade after decade, Thomas Built Buses has followed one simple philosophy: design and built the kind of bus that we'd want our own children to ride in. It's a simple idea and it works. Passenger safety is our number one priority and every bus we manufacture meets or exceeds all Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards for school buses.
